Grow Media – The Foundation of Every Successful Grow

Grow media is the material your plants grow in — from propagation through to maturity. The right choice of medium directly affects how your plants absorb water, nutrients, and oxygen, making it one of the most important decisions in setting up any growing system.

We stock a comprehensive range of grow media suitable for soil growing, hydroponics, coco, and mixed systems — from beginner-friendly options to specialist substrates used by experienced growers.

Types of Grow Media

Soil & Compost
The most natural growing medium. Soil supports beneficial microbial life and is well-suited to organic feeding programmes. Available in light, enriched, and peat-free blends.

Coco Coir
Made from natural coconut fibres, coco offers excellent drainage and aeration while retaining moisture. Compatible with both mineral and organic nutrients, and ideal for hydroponic-style feeding in pots or systems.

Rockwool (Stonewool)
A sterile, inert medium made from spun volcanic rock. Widely used for propagation and hydroponic growing due to its consistent structure and excellent water-to-air ratio.

Clay Pebbles (Hydroton / LECA)
Reusable, pH-neutral pebbles that provide excellent drainage and root oxygenation. Commonly used in hydroponic systems, as a top dressing, or mixed with other media.

Perlite
A lightweight volcanic mineral added to soil or coco to improve drainage and prevent compaction. Often used as a standalone medium or blended at 10–30% with other substrates.

Choosing the Right Grow Media

  • Match your medium to your feeding style — organic feeds suit soil; mineral feeds suit coco, rockwool, and hydroponics
  • Consider drainage and water retention needs based on your watering frequency and system type
  • Factor in reusability — clay pebbles can be cleaned and reused; coco and rockwool are typically single-use
